Dear Nuala:
As a total lark, I decided to get a reading from a psychic at one of those metaphysical fairs. It ended up being an awesome experience and she gave me some great advice.
I told my sister about it and she had a fit. She said psychics are mentioned in the Bible and are workers of Satan and I’d better repent and never do that again.
Well, the psychic was so helpful that I was planning to see her again, but I also don’t want to go to hell. Please help!

Dear Born again Baptist from Baytown
You won’t go to hell. It doesn’t exist except to keep the masses under control.
Go back to the psychic, explore your alternatives for soul growth, find your path, and keep it to yourself. Going to a psychic then telling a born again Baptist is akin to a witch going to an inquisition and blabbing about her latest spell. It’s only done by masochists. Did you really expect your sister to change her reality because you had a good time at a psychic fair?
We must show mercy on folks faced with everlasting torment in hell when they stray from the straight and narrow. Throwing information at them that they’re unable to process is a rather cruel attack on their soul path. After all, they’re having enough trouble keeping themselves out of Lucifer’s fiery grasp without having to deal with your interference
Once we get to the realization that there is no hell and heaven is a long way off, we have a hard time dealing with our own perceived hypocrisy. We feel guilty sitting in a traditional church reciting money spells or visualizing the perfect partner. (Personally, I don’t see what the problem is as long as our intonations aren’t drowning out the sermon.) We abhor the pain that fear of burning forever in hellfire creates in our loved ones. We want to tell them our truths. We want to relieve their fear and make them as content as we are. Let me assure you (from experience) they won’t listen and you’ll be adding to their burden because once you reveal your heathen beliefs, they’ll feel the necessity to save your soul as well as their own.
Have faith in the Universe. When it’s time for the mundane to see, a higher force will open their eyes. If you’re with them when they speak their first doubting words, you may be able to help them transcend. Otherwise, don’t interfere. Each of us has our own destiny, and each destiny is made up of learning experiences that we have to go through.
Many years ago, I raised Monarch butterflies as a hobby. Before I bought butterfly plants for them to suck on, I studied their life cycle. Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, emergence, flight, and then back to egg. In one question and answer column with the experts, a woman asked why her butterflies died soon after she helped them out of the chrysalis.
A butterfly takes a long time getting out of the womb because, as it squeezes through the tight opening, it wrings excess fluid from its body. If it misses this critical process, it can’t air dry so its waterlogged body drowns. There’s nothing that can compensate for this missed step. When the woman, in an act of kindness, chose to help them through this arduous process, she killed them.
I think our soul journey must be like the emergence of the butterfly. If we miss one decisive step, we miss the subsequent lessons. Leave your family and friends to find their own peace and know that we’ll all find our way eventually. I think it was Gandhi who said, “There are many paths up the mountain, but only one peak.”
