     The Wavespell of the Blue Monkey starts May 4, 2011, with thirteen days to awaken our inner child and have fun!

     In this fast paced world, where we constantly need to perform and “run against the clock”, it is so easy to get caught in our daily struggles that we end up living in an automatic pilot missing all the wonderful opportunities that life gives us to feel joy.

     The Wavespell of the Blue Monkey reminds us of the importance of enjoying life, to recover our humor and play with wonder and childlike innocence.

Amélie Poulain

     Romantic comedy with Audrey Tautou, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001

     In case you haven’t seen the French movie Amélie yet, I will not tell you all about the film, but the main aspects why I related it with the Wavespell of the Blue Monkey when I saw it many years ago. Not only was the story told in a magical way, but mainly due to Amélie’s charming character and her innocent way to experience life.

     Amélie had a very lonely childhood. She grew up with no siblings or playmates and she became a very shy and introverted girl. With very simple elements, Amélie always found a way to have fun. Just to mention a few, she was amazed by the cloud shapes in the sky, she painted faces in her hands and told stories and she loved making sounds with different objects. Amélie was very creative, always living in her own “bubble” and the world of imagination.
 
     With time, she developed a great appreciation in enjoying life’s simple pleasures. She loved going to the market and dipping her hands into sacks of grain, looking at people’s faces while in the cinema, throwing bouncing stones in the water, and amusing herself with silly questions. Amélie was constantly finding something to do and keeping herself busy in a very naïve way.

     There was one experience that changed Amélie’s life. When founding the owner of a hidden box after 40 years, she realized that her mission was to help others. This miraculous moment helped the treasure’s owner to reconnect with his own childhood and what was really important in life. Witnessing his reaction of pure joy and wonder gave Amélie the feeling of absolute harmony, breathing deeply in the perfect moment while realizing how simple life was.

     After being determined to anonymously be there for others, she embarked an adventurous and creative path of touching people’s hearts. In a very subtle way, she became a secret matchmaker and guardian angel for many. She helped a blind man to cross the street and, while walking with him for a couple of blocks, she gave him an amusing description of what was happening in the surroundings. She helped her father to follow his traveling dream by stealing his garden gnome and asking her flight attendant friend to send him pictures with it from around the world. She instilled a romantic relationship between her colleague and a customer. And many more.

     Amélie was a dreamer and she made up stories with possible scenarios in her own life and the life of others. She was regularly creating mysterious situations which, once solved, they were becoming luminous experiences for the people involved.

     In all cases, they were transformational events, each person in his or her own way, having in common the reconnection with purity, simplicity, wonder and how magical life can be.

     There were several other situations that can relate to the Wavespell of the Blue Monkey, including Amélie’s own love story with Nino, but I will leave it for you to see them by yourself.
