Our beautiful state of Texas is currently baking and burning in our worst drought in 100 years. The loss of thousands of homes, businesses, timber, livestock, pets, and property to the most extensive outbreak of wildfires in Texas history is heart-breaking.
My mentor, Linda Howe, always encourages her students to “see the good” in any situation. I have to admit, even though I am not directly affected by the wildfires and their aftermath, looking at the images of the fires and the death and destruction left in their wake brings tears to my eyes and sorrow to my heart.
We hear and read a lot these days about 2012, Earth changes, cataclysms of flood, fire, and drought, and that all of our crumbling institutions and structures, as well as traditional materialistic ideals and beliefs have to be destroyed to make way for a transition in human consciousness.
This morning with the images of the Texas wildfires heavy on my mind, I asked in the Akashic Records, “Isn’t there another way to raise the vibration of humanity, to transform human consciousness without death and destruction?”
I was reminded that “Like Attracts Like”. You can choose your thoughts, which create your beliefs, and ultimately result in your actions and experiences. To rise above duality, to move beyond the judgment of right and wrong or good and bad, one must consciously realize that The Source, Creator, God, Universe—whatever your label for The All that Is—and Its infinite resources of Unconditional Love are ever present, constant and unwavering. There can be no separation from The Divine, because we are One with The Divine. As human beings we are the physical expression of The Divine as we walk in this material world.
It is so easy to get caught up in this drama we call “life” in the physical world. Perhaps it is time to reflect on and remember who we are, to delve deeply into our own hearts and see that we are Light encapsulated in these magnificent human bodies. I find that is easiest for me to connect with the Divine and my highest Self through gratitude.
But how can one find gratitude in the ashes of a family home burned to the ground, or in the loss of every material possession? You have to start with the very basics. “I am thankful that I am alive. I am thankful for each breath of air that fills my lungs. I am grateful for the thirst quenching taste of a bottle of water I have been handed by a relief worker. I am thankful that my family is safe and out of harm’s way. I am grateful and watch with awe as thousands of mostly volunteer firemen and rescue workers literally place their lives on the line for strangers they will never know, to contain the wildfires and prevent further devastation. I am so touched by and grateful for the outpouring of compassion and resources being expressed by those outside the range of the fires to those thousands of people who experienced the devastation. I am grateful for every moment of the experience of obtaining these material possessions and building this life that has now been so dramatically transformed by the crucible of the Texas wildfires.”
What can we do, the onlookers, the observers of the drought, the massive wildfires, the property loss and devastation? We can change our thoughts, our beliefs; we can deliberately change our consciousness about the life we experience.
Native American tradition includes a practice to "Pray Rain". This is a distinctly different practice than praying FOR rain, pleading or begging God for rain. When you ask for something, you believe that you do not have it; your consciousness is one of lack or loss. You believe that you are separate from your desire. In effect, you are so sure that you are separate from your desire, that your belief is actually pushing the desired outcome farther away. To "Pray Rain" means to KNOW that your desire is happening in the current moment, and you express heart-felt gratitude for the experience.
To "Pray Rain" was traditionally done at a sacred site, standing barefoot in the dirt of the Medicine Wheel, circumscribed by carefully-placed stones. There was acknowledgement and thanksgiving for the gifts of the six directions: East, South, West, North, Above, and Below.
The person “Praying Rain” would connect, through the Heart, to all of Creation and the Divine Father and Mother in a profound state of gratitude for the healing, nourishing rain and the resulting abundance of food, water, flora, and fauna which provide all of the needs of The People.
In the experience of “Praying Rain,” one would experience the nourishing rain with all of the senses: Feel the cool rain on your skin and face, splash in a puddle with your feet, and then dig your toes into the soft mud. Taste the rain on your tongue, drink deeply of a large cup of cool, clear water you have dipped from the pool of a gurgling spring. Hear the rain splashing on hard surfaces and puddles, drumming against a tin roof or porch awning. Hear the awesome crack of lightning. Behold its blinding, searing light zigzagging across the sky. Feel the resonance of the resulting thunder in your bones. See in your mind's eye clouds forming into tall thunderheads, turning darker as they fill with rain. Marvel at sheets of rain unleashed from the sky, at just the right volume to nourish the thirsty Earth. Delight in birds drinking from puddles of fresh rainwater, flowers springing up from seeds that have been lying dormant in the dirt, beautiful lawns of green grass, and strong, tall trees covered with beautiful green leaves. See our lakes and reservoirs at the perfect level to provide plenty of water for our communities. Observe families enjoying the lake parks, children swimming, water skiers and sailboats skimming the surface of the lake. Smell that indescribable scent of rain-cleansed air carried on a refreshing cool breeze. Enjoy the fragrance of blooming flowers and flowering shrubs: Indian Hawthorne, honeysuckle, roses, lilies, lilac, and hyacinth. Smell the sharp scent of rosemary as you rub your hands along the soft, supple spines of a healthy bush. See the abundance of beautiful purple blooms covering the sage bushes after a soaking rain. Smell the fragrance of fresh-mown grass resulting from the need to mow twice a week due to the spontaneous growth occurring after frequent soaking rains!
Experience all of these things from the depth of your being, in a profound state of gratitude and joy, cherishing and storing all of these experiences in your heart, so that they may be accessed by your mind and your senses at any time that you wish to express your gratitude to the Source of All for the abundance of all good things that fill our daily experiences.
Living in a state of gratitude raises the frequency and vibration of your thoughts. Like Attracts Like. Feel, see, hear, smell, and taste your desire, and so it must be. Open your heart, mind, and soul to embrace the rain and all of its beautiful blessings. Connect to The Source through Nature, and receive its abundance with deep gratitude and joy. Generously give of your bounty to others and to the Earth and her creatures with love and compassion, knowing that your connection to The Infinite and Its resources can be recognized and renewed moment-by-moment through a thankful Heart.
